Dr Thanh Nguyen is a Melbourne trained eye specialist and surgeon specialising in general ophthalmology. He has a strong interest in diseases of the retina. He is currently an ophthalmology consultant at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and Monash Health while undertaking research fellowship at the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA).
Following his undergraduate studies, Thanh received his PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2009. He went on to become a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) in 2015.
Thanh believes that patients benefit from his thorough and informative manner. They are given time to ask questions and become fully apprised of their condition and required treatment.
Dr Nguyen’s patients fully understand the treatment options available to them and the associated benefits and risks. He follows this up with a comprehensive management plan which is made available to both the patient and their GP.
Dr Thanh Nguyen has over 40 peer-reviewed publications, including top ranked journals in the field of Diabetes (Diabetes, Diabetes Care), and Ophthalmology (Ophthalmology, IOVS). In addition, he has been a peer-reviewer for 17 Journals including Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Annals of Neurology and a range of Ophthalmology journals.
His primary research interest is to utilise retinal image analysis to understand the changes of the retinal vasculature in patients with pre-diabetes and diabetes. He has been the leading author for large-scale studies that have direct relevance to diabetes and retinal vascular diseases. Through his research, Dr Nguyen has formed well-established collaborations. He has worked with clinicians (ophthalmologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists) and scientists nationally and internationally. He is currently a supervisor for PhD students at the university.
Dr Nguyen has received competitive grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, National Heart Foundation and the Diabetes Australia Research Trust.
