BLEPHAROPLASTY – Discharge Instruction

Your Surgery

You have had surgery to remove excess skin from your upper eyelid(s).

Specific discharge advice

You will have some stiches on your upper eyelid(s). Do not rub or pull on the stiches and keep the area dry.
You may shower, but avoid getting water, shampoo or soap directly in your eye. If this happens, rinse your eye with cooled boiled water and do not rub your eye.
If you are wearing and eye pad, removes as your doctor’s instruction.
Your doctor has prescribed antibiotic ointment, start using these after removing the eye pad.
Your eyelid(s) maybe slightly sore after the operation. It may be necessary to take some Paracetamol (e.g. Panadol) for pain relief.
Avoid taking Aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicines (e.g. Ibuprofen) for pain relief as this may cause bleeding.
Your eyelid(s) may be a little bruised for a few days. Do not worry, as this will settle down by itself. You may apply icepacks for 15 minutes four times a day to reduce swelling.
Your eyelid(s) may bleed slightly after the operation. Do not worry, as this will settle.
It is recommended that you do not drive until your vision has been assessed by a doctor or optometrist.
Take care with steps and crossing the road.

Complications

Please contact our room on 03 9975 8767 or Emergency Department immediately if you experience any of the following after your surgery and before being assessed by your doctor:

• Prolonged bleeding or swelling
• Change in vision
• Increase in discharge from the eye and yellow discharge
• Severe pain not relieved by Paracetamol.
